On 19 October the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi announced the dates for the Liwa International Festival 2027: 11 December 2026 to 2 January 2027, amid the dunes of the Liwa desert in the Al Dhafra Region, under the patronage of Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan. It is one of the few moments all year when this remote stretch of sand, at the northern edge of the Rub al Khali, fills with heritage, motorsport and music, and then empties again. For anyone planning a private, unhurried trip, that rhythm is the point.
What DCT Abu Dhabi announced
The festival runs for just over three weeks, from 11 December to 2 January, and is staged against Tal Moreeb, described as the UAE's tallest dune at more than 300 metres. It returns with a first-ever Heritage Village inspired by a traditional Emirati neighbourhood, and with more than half of the rides and attractions at Liwa Village either new or reimagined.
The programme leans on spectacle. Nitro Circus makes its festival debut with three shows on 19 and 20 December, while the motorsport strand, the Falcon Race, Liwa Drift and the Liwa Burnout Challenge, builds toward the Tal Moreeb Car Championship finale from 30 December to 2 January. Visitors can also book camping and RV spots through the festival's new app, and several desert forts host cultural activations.
Why it matters for a private traveller
Liwa is not a city-break add-on. It sits at the threshold of the Empty Quarter, a landscape that stays silent and enormous for most of the year. The festival does not change that geography, it simply gives you a reason to be there in the cool season, with a cultural and motorsport anchor on one side of the dune and uninterrupted desert on the other.
That contrast suits a private visit more than a mass one. A dedicated guide and car let you dip into the Heritage Village or the Tal Moreeb finale when it peaks, then withdraw to a luxury desert resort and a private dune drive far from the crowds and the parking. You get the event as a highlight, not as a logistical ordeal.
Folding it into a private itinerary
Liwa lies deep in Al Dhafra, a few hours' chauffeured drive south of Abu Dhabi, so a private transfer with an overnight stay makes far more sense than a day trip. Camping and RV options exist for those who want them, but the premium base here is a desert lodge, from which you can time your festival hours and keep the rest of the day calm.
On the calendar, the long run from 11 December to 2 January overlaps UAE National Day season and New Year, the busiest desert weeks of the year, so the best lodges book out early. The Tal Moreeb Car Championship finale from 30 December to 2 January is the natural anchor for a private New Year escape, with the quieter opening days better for travellers who prefer the dunes to the grandstand.
Treat the Liwa festival as a backdrop, not the whole trip: a private car, a desert lodge and well-chosen hours turn a crowded event into a calm winter escape at the edge of the Empty Quarter.
